Ottawa and Gatineau

Google Ads, SEO and AI visibility for businesses in Ottawa

I run Google Ads, SEO and AIO consulting for Ottawa and Gatineau businesses, remotely, as one accountable person rather than an account team you never meet. The National Capital Region does not behave like a normal Canadian market, and the plan should reflect that rather than ignore it.

What marketing in Ottawa actually has to account for

Ottawa has an economy most Canadian cities do not: the federal public service is the region's largest employer, with roughly 130,600 federal public servants working in the National Capital Region as of March 2023. If your customers are federal departments, search advertising is close to useless for reaching them, because that money moves through procurement, not through a Google click. What search does buy you there is being credible when a procurement officer, a prime contractor or a hiring panel looks you up, which is an SEO and AIO problem rather than a paid one.

The other Ottawa is Kanata North, Canada's largest technology park, with more than 540 companies and roughly 33,000 employees. That is a long-sales-cycle B2B market where nobody signs a six-figure contract off a search ad, but where being absent from the research phase quietly costs you the shortlist. And underneath both sits an ordinary local economy of trades, clinics, restaurants and professional services, where Google Ads works exactly the way it works anywhere.

So the honest answer for Ottawa is that the right channel depends on which of those three economies you sell into, more than it depends on your budget. That is the first thing I will ask you, and it changes the recommendation completely.

Three ways to grow an Ottawa business, run by one accountable person

Same three services everywhere I work. What changes in Ottawa is which one is worth your money, and that depends almost entirely on whether you sell to government, to Kanata's technology sector, or to the people who live here. Tell me which and I will tell you where I would start.

Google Ads Management

Best fit for the local Ottawa economy: trades, clinics, restaurants, professional services, anyone whose customer types a problem into Google and picks somebody that week. Rebuilt account structure, conversion tracking that counts booked work, and spend cut off the searches that were never going to convert. Least useful if your buyer is a federal department.

$1,500/month + ad spend

SEO Consulting

The channel that does the most work in Ottawa, because so much of the buying here starts with research rather than a click. Technical fixes, then the pages that answer what your buyers and their procurement people actually search. Slower than ads, and it keeps paying after you stop.

$1,200/month

AIO Consulting

Being the Ottawa business ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name when someone asks for a recommendation or a shortlist. Particularly relevant in a research-heavy market like the National Capital Region, and new enough that most of your Ottawa competitors have not started.

Where in Ottawa I work

Across the National Capital Region

I take on clients throughout the region, in Centretown, Kanata, Nepean, Orleans, Barrhaven, Stittsville, the ByWard Market, Gatineau, Hull and Aylmer. Everything is run remotely over video and email, so which side of the river you are on makes no difference to the work or the price.

And the surrounding markets

The Ottawa search market does not stop at the city boundary, and neither do your competitors. I work with businesses across Gatineau, Kanata, Orleans, Nepean, Barrhaven, Rockland and Carleton Place on the same terms.

Questions Ottawa businesses ask

Do you have an office in Ottawa?

No. I am based in Toronto and work from home, so there is no Ottawa office and I am not going to pretend there is one. Everything is run remotely over video and email, which is how I run every account regardless of city. If you want someone who will physically come to your office, I am the wrong hire and I will say so on the call.

We sell to the federal government. Will Google Ads help?

Usually not directly, and I would rather tell you that before you spend the money. Federal buying goes through procurement, not through search ads. Where search does matter for you is credibility during research: the buyer, the prime contractor or the partner who looks you up should find a site that clearly explains what you do and who you have done it for. That is SEO and AIO work. If you also sell commercially, then ads are worth discussing for that side of the business.

Do we need a French version of our website in Ottawa?

It depends on which side of the river you operate. A business with an establishment in Quebec, including Gatineau, has obligations under the Charter of the French Language covering commercial publications and websites, and enforcement tightened as of June 2025. An Ontario-side Ottawa business has no such legal obligation, though this is the most bilingual major market in the country and a French page is often worth building on commercial grounds alone. I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice: the Office québécois de la langue française publishes the actual requirements, and a Quebec lawyer should confirm what applies to you.

Which service should an Ottawa business start with?

If you sell to consumers or local businesses, Google Ads, because it produces customers in weeks. If you sell to government or into Kanata's technology sector, SEO and AIO, because your buyers research before they ever create an opportunity. Pick one and do it properly rather than three badly.

What does this cost?

Google Ads management is $1,500 a month plus your ad spend. SEO consulting is $1,200 a month. AIO consulting is $1,800 one time. No setup fees and no long contract.
